What does Mindset mean: the power of the mentality

“Mindset refers to the basic patterns of belief and thought that can be translated into” Turkish as a “mentality” or “thinking structure” and determine the way the individual perceives, interprets and responds to the world. This concept, which has become popular with the research of Carol S. Dweck, Professor of Stanford University, plays a vital role in the journey of success and happiness. Dweck defines two basic mentality types: fixed mentality and developing mentality.

Fixed Mindset: Individuals with this mentality believe that their intelligence, talent and abilities are innate, invariant features. They attribute success to ability and interpret failures as a deficiency of their abilities. They are reluctant to new challenges because they are afraid of failing. They perceive criticism as a personal attack and move to defense instead of learning from criticism. They think that effort shows lack of ability and therefore avoid efforts. As a result, their development is limited and cannot fully realize their potential. For example, if a student is forced in mathematics class, if he has a fixed mentality, he may think “I have no ability to mathematics” and may prefer to give up the lesson instead of making efforts.

Growth Mindset): Individuals with developing mentality believe that intelligence, talent and abilities are developable and changeable features. They associate success with efforts, learning and determination. They see failures as an opportunity to learn and learn from their mistakes. They openly approach new challenges and focus on continuous development. They evaluate criticism as a tool for development and develop themselves by learning from criticism. They see effort as a necessity on the way to success and constantly strive to improve themselves. As a result, they can maximize their potential and can constantly gain new skills. In the same example of mathematics, when the student with a developing mentality is forced, he may think “I need to work harder” and can try to move forward by calling additional resources, studying or taking help from his teacher.

Effects of the Mentality: The effect of the mentality manifests itself in many areas of life. It has been associated with a mentality developing in areas such as academic success, business life, relationships and personal development, higher success rates and more happiness. Research shows that individuals with a developing mentality experience less anxiety and depression, have more self-esteem and are more resistant. For example, individuals who are open to continuous development in business life and are willing to learn new skills can get promoted more quickly and may be more successful.

How can you improve your mentality? It is a process that requires time and effort to change your mentality, but it is possible. Here are some strategies that will help you improve your mentality:
